Writing Module in IELTS: Essay and Report Writing

Writing in IELTS Module is one of the module from Academic Test Format of IELTS which is 60 minutes test.

It consists of two tasks which are given below:

IELTS Writing Task 1: Pictorial information (Report Writing)

It is a report writing task for a chart

Answers should be 150+ words in IELTS writing Task 1

The task carries 1/3rd (33%) marks of writing

Ideally, 20 minutes should be given for these task.

Connecting Words

These are the connecting words which makes the report writing much more coherent and concise.

(i).To begin with, to commence with, firstly,lastly are the words to be used

(ii).Similarly, inaddition, in the same manner, likewise…..

(iii).On the other hand, conversely, in the opposite manner, however …..

(iv). Furthermore, Moreover, also meanwhile ….

Tense Formulae

(i). Dates in past :Past tense.

(ii).Dates in future :Future tense.

(iii).Dates in past and Future : Past and Future tense.

(iv).No data: Present tense.

IELTS Writing Task 1:Types of Charts

The types of charts in IELTS Writing Task 1 are given below:

1.Bar Charts

First of all, you have to analyze the question given

Figure out the main features of the given question

Then, write an appealing introduction by evaluating the question

After that, an overview has to be written

Finally, You need to write the detailed paragraph

2.Line Graph

You have to show change in quantity with respect to time

All the frequently used terms are relative in nature

The quantifying words like minimal, exponential, slight etc. are used

Time denoting words like gradually, swiftly, in a swift manner increases coherence and clarity,

3.Pie Chart

It is fundamentally different from a bar chart and line chart in the sense that , the total sum of pie chart is 100%

Hence, a pie chart shows the ratio of given data.

Pie chart language should be used as:

(a). Accounts for——————–>For Body A

(b).Comprises for——————->For Body B

(c).Represents for ——————> For Body C

Sometimes substitutes as:

half for 50%

third for 33%

quarter for 25%

For Overview:

(a). When date is given: When data is given highlights key changes that happened in different time periods.

(b).When data is not given: I like smallest and largest portion

e.g: snack is at 42% sugar . ❌

Snack contains 42% sugar.❌

Snack accounts for 42% sugar use.☑️

4.Table

It is the most trivial form of representing data

Some tables might not have data

Some tables have 0,1 or 2 units of measurement

For Overview:

->Group the given data into most sensible groups

->Show the maximum and minimum for both these groups.

5.Combination of Above(Bar Chart,Line Charts, Pie Charts and Table)

These questions may have two units of measurement

Address data regarding both charts and overview

While splitting body:

(a). If charts match with each other: split data inside for Body A and Body B

(b). If charts do not match with each other:

Body A: Chart 1

Body B: Chart 2

6.Process/Diagrams

The process and diagrams has no units of measurement

Well, we have to write always in present tense

For Overview:

[Number of steps or multistep process] + [beginning step] + [ending step]

7.Maps

The maps has no units of measurement

If the present date is given then, we need to use present tense

We need to look for addition, removal and substitution

We need to use compass:

IELTS Writing Task 2: Essay Writing

The IELTS Writing Task 2 is an essay writing task

Well, we need to write 250+ words for the essay

It carries 2/3rd which is equal to 66% marks of writing

Ideally, 40 minutes should be given for these tasks

We should not use symbols: For e.g: 5$ -❌ , Five Dollars ☑️
